Visiting the French Alps

Mountaineering, skiing, snowboarding and hiking are the popular activities that are conducted here. Scaling the peak of Mont Blanc is quite a challenging task and popular among mountaineers from around the world. There are some very popular tracking routes which lead to the top of the summit.

Voie des Cristalliers or Voie Royale is the most preferred route. La Voie des 3 Monts or La Traversée is another popular route. A couple of other mountain peaks named Mont Maudit and Mont Blanc du Tacul fall along the way. Owing to the three peaks in the route, including that of Mont Blanc, have earned it this title (La Voie des 3 Monts or Voyage to Three Mountains).

Miage, Bionnassay, Mont Blanc crossing takes around three days to get completed. Beginning from Contamines-Montjoie, it goes through Dômes de Miages on first day. From there, hikers proceed to Dômes de Miages and then to the peak, Mont Blanc.

The Chamonix Valley offers a splendid view from a distance. So does the imposing Mont Blanc. While advancing to the French Alps from Passy, Haute-Savoie, one can have a magnificent view of the west face of the Mont Blanc.

Apart from hiking, mountaineering and skiing, there are a couple of other activities for adrenaline enthusiasts. White water rafting and paragliding are enjoyed by numerous tourists coming to here.

One may also find immensely beautiful lakes, Lac de Bourget, Lake Geneva and Lac d'Annecy. A number of water sports are conducted here around the whole year. This region has got a number of resort towns namely Annecy, Grenoble, St. Gervais and Chamonix. Grenoble hosted Winter Olympic Games in the year 1968. Albertville hosted the games in 1992.

Grenoble is the access point to the French Alps. It can be reached from Paris via the international airport located here. It is well connected with domestic cities and major international cities as well. Ordinary and fast trains connect it with all parts of France.

The region is dotted with numerous skiing resorts. These include those at Alpe d'Huez, Chamonix, Le Grande Massif, Les Trois Vallées, Portes du Soleil and Val Thorens. Water sports are organized throughout the year at lakes in Aiguebelette, Annecy and Bourget along with the Lake Geneva.

There are numerous restaurants and resorts where one can stay and enjoy the delicious French delicacies. Some of these delicacies are exclusive to the region including the specially prepared cheese. One may have to shell out a higher price for almost every thing as compared to that in planes. A glass of beer in a bar here would cost around 4 Euros. Similarly, other stuff is available at a comparatively higher price.
